A new Story

Mike grew up in Galion, attending St. Joe's elementary and then the public schools. He graduated from Galion High School, and then Ohio State University in accounting. While in high school, he managed Clancy's along side me, and we had some fun times there. He worked as a CPA in public accounting for several years before transitioning into finance and executive roles in a number of companies, including Nationwide Insurance. He taught me how to read a balance sheet and P&L, and taught me the value of saying no to an unnecessary expense. As an entrepreneur, he partnered with me in several businesses. We were partners in Ohio Proficiency Test Review, Inc (which later became E&A Publishing), and later as a partner and Director of the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy. Mike also contributed to many other small businesses when he joined FOCUS CFO, serving as a contract CFO. He also helped other businesses flourish through the Columbus (Ohio) Business First Round Table mentoring program. He loved describing how he had advised someone to help a business flourish. Mike met Cecelia and immediately fell in love. They dated throughout their marriage, hosting parties and taking family vacations filled with love and fun. He enjoyed the ocean, and scuba dived with Cecelia, and skied with her as well all over the US. Eventually, as Andy and Christina flourished and grew, the family bought a Lake Eire lake-front condo as a vacation home, where they spent long weekends over many summers. And wherever the Mike and Cecelia went, they made friends--and kept them all. His bout with pancreatic cancer was valiant, surviving roughly 18 months after his diagnosis. He would have been included in a clinical trial had it not been for other systemic complications. Even in death, he continues to sacrifice for others, having his body donated for research to the Ohio University medical school. Mike was a friend, spouse, father, brother, devoted son, and businessman. To me, he was as much a brother as any man has been. He lived his life with a positive and giving spirit. If one ever wonders if cancer is an evil disease, consider this: it took one of the finest humans from us far too soon and well before his time. But, cancer can never take Mike's legacy of love, spirit, and humanity. That legacy resides in ever person he touched, everyone he knew, and every business or cause to which he gave of himself. Live on, Mike, in all of us that knew you. Live on.
